The IPL 2027 season is still some distance away, but the early picture is already taking shape. With the 2026 season completed and teams beginning to prepare for the next auction cycle, it is possible to assess which franchises currently have the strongest foundation.
CricZone99’s early IPL 2027 team rankings put Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at No. 1, followed by Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
However, this is not simply a ranking based on the 2026 points table.
We have considered batting quality, bowling strength, all-round depth, squad balance, leadership, recent IPL performance and the potential to improve before IPL 2027.
IPL 2027 Team Rankings
| Rank | Team | Strength Rating | 2027 Outlook |
| 1 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 9.1/10 | Championship benchmark |
| 2 | Gujarat Titans | 8.8/10 | Serious title contender |
| 3 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | 8.5/10 | High-ceiling contender |
| 4 | Rajasthan Royals | 8.3/10 | Strong young core |
| 5 | Punjab Kings | 8.0/10 | Dangerous contender |
| 6 | Kolkata Knight Riders | 7.8/10 | Needs targeted upgrades |
| 7 | Delhi Capitals | 7.7/10 | Potential to climb |
| 8 | Mumbai Indians | 7.6/10 | Huge upside, major questions |
| 9 | Chennai Super Kings | 7.3/10 | Entering a transition phase |
| 10 | Lucknow Super Giants | 7.2/10 | Needs significant improvement |
CricZone99 verdict: RCB currently have the strongest overall foundation for IPL 2027, but GT and SRH are close enough to challenge them.
How We Ranked the IPL 2027 Teams
Our rankings use seven factors:
- Batting strength – 20%
- Bowling strength – 20%
- All-round depth – 15%
- Squad depth – 15%
- Leadership and experience – 10%
- Recent IPL performance – 10%
- Squad flexibility for 2027 – 10%
The most important point is that 2026 results are not the same thing as 2027 strength.
A team can finish strongly one season and still fall down the rankings if its squad has major weaknesses or requires significant rebuilding.
Likewise, a team that underperformed in 2026 can move up quickly if it has a strong core and addresses its biggest weaknesses.
1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 9.1/10
Why RCB are No. 1
Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the IPL 2027 cycle as the team everyone else has to chase.
They won the 2026 IPL final against Gujarat Titans and successfully defended their previous championship, giving them back-to-back IPL titles.
That immediately makes RCB the benchmark for this ranking. But the reason they are No. 1 is not simply the trophy.
Their bigger advantage is balance.
RCB have a strong combination of experienced batting, quality Indian players, overseas options and a bowling attack capable of handling different match situations.
Biggest strengths
Batting: 9.2/10
Bowling: 9.2/10
Depth: 9.0/10
Leadership: 9.0/10
The franchise also has an important psychological advantage: it now knows what a championship-winning squad looks like.
Biggest concern
The challenge for RCB will be avoiding complacency.
Once a team becomes the favorite, opposition teams prepare specifically for its weaknesses. RCB will also need to make smart decisions around the 2027 auction rather than assuming the championship-winning combination cannot be improved.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #1
RCB are the team to beat until another franchise gives us a stronger reason to move them.
2. Gujarat Titans – 8.8/10
Gujarat Titans are our No. 2 team.
The gap between GT and RCB is small.
GT finished the 2026 league stage with the same number of wins and points as RCB and then reached the IPL final.
That makes them one of the safest teams to back heading into the 2027 cycle.
Why GT rank so highly
GT have an excellent combination of:
- top-order batting
- middle-order stability
- high-quality bowling
- spin options
- experienced match-winners
- a strong Indian core
Their batting also gives them a particularly high ceiling.
Biggest strengths
Batting: 9.1/10
Bowling: 9.0/10
Squad balance: 8.9/10
Biggest concern
The biggest question is whether GT can take the final step. They were good enough to reach the 2026 final but could not finish the campaign with the trophy.
That experience could make them even more dangerous in 2027.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #2
GT are arguably the closest challenger to RCB right now.
3. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 8.5/10
Sunrisers Hyderabad are our No. 3 team. They finished the 2026 league stage with nine wins and 18 points, putting them level with RCB and GT on points.
That alone makes them difficult to ignore.
Why SRH rank third
SRH’s biggest strength is their ability to produce explosive cricket. When their top order gets going, they can change the direction of a match in a matter of overs.
Their challenge is turning that high ceiling into consistent results across a full tournament.
Biggest strengths
- explosive batting
- attacking approach
- match-winning individual players
- strong scoring potential
Biggest concern
Consistency.
If SRH can improve their ability to handle difficult match situations, they have enough quality to challenge for the title.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #3
SRH are one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament and could move even higher before IPL 2027.
4. Rajasthan Royals – 8.3/10
Rajasthan Royals come in at No. 4. Their 2026 campaign was strong enough to finish fourth in the league table, with eight wins from 14 matches.
But their biggest reason for optimism is not simply their 2026 record.
It is their young talent base.
The franchise has several players who can continue improving and potentially become even more influential by IPL 2027.
Biggest strengths
- young Indian talent
- batting potential
- attacking players
- long-term squad upside
Biggest concern
The Royals need greater consistency against the strongest teams. If their young core develops as expected, they could challenge the top three.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #4
RR are one of the teams with the biggest potential to outperform their current ranking.
5. Punjab Kings – 8.0/10
Punjab Kings occupy fifth place.
They finished the 2026 league stage with seven wins, six losses and one no-result, giving them 15 points.
That was enough to establish them as a competitive side, but there is still a gap between PBKS and the championship favorites.
Biggest strengths
- strong batting options
- dangerous match-winners
- improving squad balance
- potential to strengthen further
Biggest concern
Consistency.
PBKS need to turn competitive performances into a sustained run of wins if they want to move into the top tier.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #5
PBKS are capable of beating any team on their day, but they need greater consistency to enter the top four.
6. Kolkata Knight Riders – 7.8/10
KKR are sixth in our early rankings. The 2026 season was mixed, with six wins, seven losses and one no-result.
That result does not completely reflect the ceiling of this franchise.
KKR still possess players capable of changing matches quickly, particularly with bat and ball.
Biggest strengths
- match-winning players
- attacking cricket
- spin options
- strong tactical potential
Biggest concern
Squad balance.
KKR need to identify exactly which roles require strengthening before the 2027 auction.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #6
A strong auction could move KKR several places higher.
7. Delhi Capitals – 7.7/10
Delhi Capitals rank seventh. They finished the 2026 league stage with seven wins and seven losses.
That makes them difficult to place too low, but there are still several areas that need improvement.
Biggest strengths
- Indian talent
- quality bowling options
- experienced players
- ability to compete with stronger teams
Biggest concern
Consistency.
DC need a more reliable combination of batting and bowling performances across the tournament.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #7
DC have the ingredients to climb this list, but the 2027 auction could be extremely important.
8. Mumbai Indians – 7.6/10
Mumbai Indians are one of the hardest teams to rank. On reputation and individual talent alone, they could easily be placed much higher.
But rankings should also consider recent performance. MI won only four of their 14 league matches in 2026 and finished ninth.
That means they cannot realistically be placed among the top three based purely on historical success.
Why they can still rise
Mumbai have one of the deepest talent pools in the IPL. They have proven match-winners and a history of building championship-quality squads.
If they solve their balance and consistency issues, they could make one of the biggest jumps before IPL 2027.
Biggest strengths
- elite individual talent
- experience
- proven IPL pedigree
- high ceiling
Biggest concern
Recent consistency.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #8
Don’t mistake this ranking for a prediction that MI will remain eighth. They have perhaps the biggest potential gap between their current position and their possible 2027 ceiling.
9. Chennai Super Kings – 7.3/10
Chennai Super Kings are ninth in our early ranking. This is not a statement about the franchise’s historical importance.
It is an assessment of its current competitive position. CSK finished the 2026 league stage with six wins and eight losses.
That record indicates that the squad needs significant improvement if Chennai are going to return to title contention.
Biggest strengths
- experience
- strong franchise culture
- tactical know-how
- ability to rebuild
Biggest concern
The transition from an experienced core to the next generation. CSK need to identify the players who can form the backbone of the next championship-winning squad.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #9
The 2027 auction could be a major turning point for Chennai.
10. Lucknow Super Giants – 7.2/10
Lucknow Super Giants currently sit at No. 10. LSG also finished the 2026 season with only four wins from 14 matches.
Their negative net run rate further highlights how far they were from the top group.
However, the franchise has enough talent to improve significantly.
Biggest strengths
- individual match-winners
- batting potential
- quality players in key positions
Biggest concern
Overall consistency and squad balance. LSG need to address multiple weaknesses rather than relying on individual brilliance.
Verdict
Current IPL 2027 ranking: #10
LSG have plenty of room to climb, but they currently have the most work to do among the ten franchises.
IPL 2027: Who Has the Strongest Squad?
Based on our current Team Strength Index, the top five are:
1. RCB – 9.1/10
2. GT – 8.8/10
3. SRH – 8.5/10
4. RR – 8.3/10
5. PBKS – 8.0/10
The most important takeaway is that there is no huge gap between the top three.
RCB currently have the strongest overall profile because they combine recent championship success with squad balance.
GT are right behind them after an excellent 2026 campaign. SRH are the wildcard because their ceiling is extremely high if they can improve consistency.
Which Team Can Improve the Most Before IPL 2027?
Mumbai Indians
MI are our biggest potential riser. Their 2026 season was poor by their standards, but their long-term ceiling remains much higher than their No. 8 position suggests.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK could also make a major jump if they successfully refresh their squad and build around a younger core.
Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR are another team to watch because targeted additions could solve several of their current weaknesses.
Which Teams Are Most Likely to Challenge for the IPL 2027 Trophy?
At this early stage, our top title contenders are:
Tier 1 – Favorites
- RCB
- GT
- SRH
Tier 2 – Serious challengers
- RR
- PBKS
Tier 3 – Potential dark horses
- KKR
- DC
- MI
Rebuilding phase
- CSK
- LSG
This ranking will change as player trades, releases and the 2027 auction reshape the squads.
Final Verdict
If IPL 2027 started with the squads exactly as we currently understand them, Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be our No. 1 team.
Their combination of recent success, squad balance and proven match-winning ability gives them the strongest starting position.
But Gujarat Titans are extremely close, while Sunrisers Hyderabad have enough firepower to challenge both.
The most interesting teams outside the top three are Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, while Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings could be the biggest movers if they make the right decisions before the 2027 season.
